The Women's Study Group of Adat Shalom-Emanuel in Rehovot, Israel is pleased to announce that this year, Naomi Graetz will be teaching us what Judaism has to say about the topic of wifebeating. The course is based on her book Silence is Deadly: Judaism Confronts Wifebeating (1998). The first class will be an overview of the syllabus during which she will share with us why she decided to delve into this topic more than 35 years ago. The 9 following sessions will all be based on the sources concerning wifebeating in the Bible, Midrash, Talmud and Responsa Literature. Naomi is revisiting these sources with us (besides the relevance of the topic today) because her book, recently translated into Hebrew, will be published by Carmel Press. Her English book is available for free download on her website.
